FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2416

 

appropriation; DPS; local border support

Purpose

Appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state General Fund (state GF) to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for local border support that includes funding for
capital-related equipment, local law enforcement officer positions and grants to cities, towns and counties.

Background

DPS is responsible for creating and coordinating services for use by local law enforcement agencies in protecting public safety and for formulating plans with a view to establishing modern services for the prevention of crime, apprehension of violators, training of law enforcement personnel and promotion of public safety. DPS consists of four divisions: 1) Arizona Highway Patrol; 2) Narcotics Enforcement and Criminal Investigation; 3) Scientific Criminal Analysis; and 4) Training and Education (A.R.S. §§ 41-1711 and 41-1712).

H.B. 2416 appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state GF to DPS.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state GF to DPS for local border support.

2.   Requires DPS to use the $20,000,000 appropriation to fund:

a)   local law enforcement officer positions for border drug interdiction to deter and apprehend individuals who are charged with drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal immigration and other border-related crimes;

b)   grants to cities, towns and counties for costs associated with prosecuting and detaining persons who are charged with drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal immigration and other border-related crimes; and

c)   all capital-related equipment.

3.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
