ARIZONA STATE SENATE

driver license examination; motorcycle awareness
Purpose
Modifies the list of items tested by the driver license examination by including knowledge of motorcycle awareness.
Background
The Arizona
Department of Transportation (ADOT) may examine an applicant for an original
driver license, accept an examination conducted by an authorized third party or
accept documentation that the person has completed an ADOT approved driver
training course or driver education lessons provided by an instructor who is
certified by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The driver license
examination must include a test of the applicant's: 1) eyesight;
2) ability to read and understand official traffic control devices; 3)
knowledge of safe driving practices and traffic laws; and 4) knowledge
regarding the effect of the use of portable wireless communication devices or
engaging in other actions that could distract a driver from the safe or
effective operation of a motor vehicle (A.R.S.
§ 28-3164).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Adds knowledge of motorcycle awareness to the items tested by the driver license examination.
2. Requires the driver license examination to include at least five questions relating to motorcycle awareness.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
