FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1550

 

appropriation; Queen Creek; law enforcement

Purpose

Appropriates $1,255,500 in FY 2027 from the state General Fund (state GF) to the State Treasurer for distribution to the Town of Queen Creek for the Queen Creek Police Department (QCPD) to establish a specialized law enforcement pilot program.

Background

            The State Treasurer's duties include: 1) authenticating writings and documents certified by the Treasurer with the seal of the State Treasurer's Office; 2) receiving and keeping in secure custody all monies that belong to Arizona and that are not required to be received and kept by some other person; 3) filing and keeping the documentation delivered to the Treasurer when monies are deposited into the Treasury; 4) delivering to each person depositing money into the Treasury a confirmation showing the date, amount and depositing agency and providing a unique identifying number for each confirmation; 5) paying warrants drawn by the Arizona Department of Administration; 6) keeping an account of all monies received and disbursed and separate accounts of the different funds and appropriations of monies; and 7) keeping information in writing as to the condition of the Treasury or on any subject relating to the duties of the Treasurer, at the request of a member of the Legislature (A.R.S. § 41-172).

            S.B. 1550 appropriates $1,255,500 in FY 2027 from the state GF to the State Treasurer.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $1,255,500 in FY 2027 from the state GF to the State Treasurer for distribution to the Town of Queen Creek for the QCPD to establish a three-year pilot program for specialized law enforcement.

2.   Requires the specialized law enforcement pilot program to focus on:

a)   the prevention of incidents of runaway youth and protection of at-risk youth from exploitation;

b)   the enhancement of the investigative capability of QCPD;

c)   strengthening collaboration with care providers and state agencies; and

d)   the production of a model framework for statewide replication.

3.   Exempts the appropriation from lapsing.

4.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
