appropriation; fencing; border; high-crossing areas

Purpose

Appropriates $20 million from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2027 to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to reimburse the installation of supplemental fencing or bollard walls in high-crossing areas along the state's southern border.

Background

DPS is responsible for creating and coordinating services for use by local law enforcement agencies in protecting the public safety and for formulating plans with a view to establish modern services for the prevention of crime, the apprehension of violators, the training of law enforcement personnel and the promotion of public safety. DPS consists of four divisions: 1) Arizona Highway Patrol; 2) Narcotics Enforcement and Criminal Investigation; 3) Scientific Criminal Analysis; and 4) Training and Education (A.R.S. §§ 41-1711 and 41-1712).

Appropriates $20 million from the state GF in FY 2027 to DPS.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $20 million from the state GF in FY 2027 to DPS to reimburse cities, towns and counties that install supplemental fencing or bollard walls in high-crossing areas along the southern border of Arizona.

2.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
