FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1156

 

appropriation; short-term detention holds

Purpose

Appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state General Fund (state GF) to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to reimburse costs associated with short-term detention holds for unauthorized aliens.

Background

DPS is responsible for creating and coordinating services for use by local law enforcement agencies in protecting the public safety and for formulating plans with a view to establish modern services for prevention of crime, apprehension of violators, training of law enforcement personnel and the promotion of public safety. DPS consists of four Divisions: 1) Arizona Highway Patrol; 2) Narcotics Enforcement and Criminal Investigation; 3) Scientific Criminal Analysis; and
4) Training and Education (A.R.S. §§ 41-1711 and 41-1712).

An unauthorized alien is an alien who does not have the legal right or authorization under federal law to work in the United States (A.R.S. § 23-211).

S.B. 1156 appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state GF to DPS.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state GF to DPS to reimburse cities, towns and counties for costs associated with short-term detention holds for unauthorized aliens.

2.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
