appropriation; independent correctional oversight office
Purpose
Appropriates $1,500,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2027 to the Corrections Oversight Fund (Fund).
Background
Laws 2025, Chapter 258 established the Independent Correctional Oversight Office (Office) to: 1) monitor the conditions of confinement and assess the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry's compliance with state and federal law; 2) provide information, as appropriate, on inmate rights; 3) promote public awareness and understanding of the rights and responsibilities of inmates; and 4) inspect each correctional facility at least once every two years.
The Office administers the Fund and the Director of the Office may accept and spend federal monies and private gifts and donations to carry out the purposes of the Office. The Fund consists of legislative appropriations, federal monies and private grants, gifts, contributions and devises (A.R.S. § 41-7007).
S.B. 1032 appropriates $1,500,000 from the state GF in FY 2027 to the Fund.
Provisions
1. Appropriates $1,500,000 from the state GF in FY 2027 to the Fund.
2. Allows the Director of the Office to use the appropriated monies for the statutorily prescribed purposes of the Office.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
