Purpose

Designates Loop 202 as the Charlie Kirk Highway and requires the designation to be included on official records, documentation and signage.

Background

The Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historical Names (ASBGHN) is responsible for: 1) determining the most appropriate names for geographic features and places of historical significance in Arizona; and 2) establishing or designating a highway or area as a parkway, historic road or scenic road that is of geographic or historical significance in Arizona (A.R.S. § 41-835.03).

The Loop 202, also known as the South Mountain Freeway, is an eight-lane freeway located in the southwest portion of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area that stretches 22 miles connecting with the Interstate 10 on each end (ADOT).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   States that, notwithstanding the statutory requirements of ASBGHN, Loop 202 is designated and also known as the Charlie Kirk Highway.

2.   Updates all official acts, state records, documents and papers relating to Loop 202 to include the Charlie Kirk Highway designation.

3.   Directs the Arizona Department of Transportation to erect a reasonable amount of signage throughout Loop 202 that includes the new designation.

4.   Specifies that the Charlie Kirk Highway designation does not supersede any current designation assigned to Loop 202 by ASBGHN.

5.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
