Overview

A constitutional amendment that increases the number of Representatives in the House of Representatives to 90 members by dividing each Senate district into three geographically separate House of Representatives districts.

History

The House of Representatives is composed of 60 members with 2 members being elected from each of the 30 legislative districts. Similarly, the Senate is composed of 30 members with 1 member being elected from each of the 30 legislative districts. The Independent Redistricting Commission (Commission) establishes the congressional and legislative districts. The Commission provides for the redistricting of congressional and Arizona legislative districts by February 28 of each year that ends in one (Article IV Part 2 § 1, Const. of Ariz.).

Provisions

1.   Recategorizes legislative districts into separate Senate districts and House of Representative districts.

2.   Requires each Senate district to be subdivided into three geographically separate House of Representatives districts.

3.   Mandates that the House of Representatives be composed of 90 members from each of the 90 House of Representatives districts.

4.   Adds an applicability clause.

5.   Instructs the Secretary of State to submit this proposition to the voters at the next general election.
