SB 1677: appropriation; salt cedar mitigation
Sponsor: Senator Dunn, LD 25
Caucus & COW
Overview
Appropriates $3,000,000 from the state General Fund (GF) in Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) for salt cedar mitigation along the Gila River and the confluence of the Gila River and the Colorado River.
History
In March 2024, DFFM conducted the Robbins Butte Pile Project to remove invasive species, like tamarisk or salt cedar, to decrease threats to wildlife and improve the habitat of the area.
According to the University of Arizona, salt cedar or tamarisk is a small deciduous, dense, wispy, spreading, loosely-branched tree or shrub with needle-like leaves similar to cedar. It is on the Arizona Noxious Weed List as a Class C noxious weed, meaning it is widespread and may be recommended for active control.
