Overview
Allows a doctor of chiropractic (DC) to engage in the practice of health care that includes diagnostic imaging, rather than diagnostic x-rays.
History
A person who wishes to practice chiropractic in Arizona must apply to the Arizona Board of Chiropractic Examiners (Board). To be eligible for an examination and licensure, an applicant must: 1) be a graduate of a chiropractic college that meets prescribed accreditation and resident course and study requirements; 2) be physically and mentally able to practice chiropractic skillfully and safely; and 3) have a certificate of attainment and a score on the examination conducted by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners as specified (A.R.S. § 32-921).
A DC is a portal of entry health care provider who engages in the practice of health care. Statute details the scope of practice for a DC, which includes: 1) physical and clinical examinations; 2) diagnostic x-rays; and 3) certain clinical diagnostic laboratory procedures. A licensed doctor of chiropractic may not prescribe or administer medicine or drugs, perform surgery or practice obstetrics (A.R.S. § 32-925).
The Board adopted a substantive policy statement in November 2011 that states it is within the scope of chiropractic for a DC to order imaging studies that include the administration of contrast media, though the DC may not administer the contrast die until they hold an additional professional license authorizing them to do so (2025 Board Jurisprudence).
