SB 1071: Arizona rangers; repeal

Sponsor: Senator Finchem, LD 1

Committee on Public Safety & Law Enforcement

Overview

Repeals all statutes regarding Arizona Rangers.

History

The Arizona Rangers are defined as an unpaid, noncommissioned civilian auxiliary that is available to assist and support law enforcement. The organization's authority does not exceed the law enforcement or investigative powers afforded to all citizens under state law. Additionally, law enforcement support and assistance services are provided on the request of, and under the direction, control and supervision of, established law enforcement officials or officers (A.R.S. § 41-4201).

A person who was a member of the Arizona Rangers organization may qualify for the Arizona Rangers pension, if the person was: 1) a member of the Arizona Rangers organization for at least six months; 2) honorably discharged; and 3) an Arizona resident since such honorable discharge from the organization. A person who qualifies is entitled to a pension of $650 per month until death or removal from the State. Lastly, the Arizona Department of Administration is required to annually adjust the amount of pensions according to the annual changes in the GDP price deflator as defined by the Economic Estimates Commission (A.R.S. § 41-951).
