Sponsor: Senator Petersen, LD 14

Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure

Overview

Designates the Loop 202 as the Charlie Kirk Loop 202 and directs all official acts, state records, documents and papers to include the designation.

History

The Arizona State Board of Geographic and Historic Names (ASBGHN) is required to receive and evaluate all proposals to establish or designate a highway or area as a parkway, historic road or scenic road that is of geographic or historical significance in this state. After this evaluation ASBGHN must designate the most appropriate and acceptable names and spelling of these names for use in maps and other official governmental documents. ASBGHN may not change street and road names for the purpose of uniformity and may not designate a name for a geographic feature that commemorates any person until that person has been deceased at least five years (A.R.S § 41-835.03).

Loop 202, South Mountain Freeway, is a 22-mile freeway designed to connect Phoenix's East and West Valleys. The freeway was completed in 2020, after being proposed over 30 years prior. Loop 202 has three officially designated sections along its route; 1) the Red Mountain Freeway; 2) the SanTan Freeway; and 3) the Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway. The Red Mountain Freeway runs from the Mini Stack Interchange with Interstate 10 (I-10) and State Route 51 in Phoenix to the SuperRedTan Interchange with U.S. Route 60 in Mesa. The SanTan Freeway runs from there to an interchange with I-10 in Chandler. The Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway runs from there to I-10 in western Phoenix.
