HB 2895: Native American language; instruction; certification

Sponsor: Representative Tsosie, LD 6

House Engrossed

Overview

Allows a student to satisfy world language instruction requirements by demonstrating proficiency in a Native American language.

History

The State Board of Education (SBE) must prescribe a minimum course of study that incorporates the academic standards adopted by SBE for the graduation of students from high school. As such, SBE requires a student to successfully complete 22 credits to graduate from high school, including 7 credits that are prescribed the school district governing board or charter school governing body. SBE does not require students to complete credits in a world language for high school graduation. However, for admission to the three Arizona public universities, the Arizona Board of Regents requires students to demonstrate competency in a second language by completing two high school credits in the same language (A.R.S. § 15-701.01) (A.A.C. R7-2-302) (ABOR Policy 2-105).

Provisions

1.   Directs SBE, a school district or a charter school that requires, in the minimum course of study for high school graduation, students to receive world language instruction to allow the students to satisfy the instruction requirement by demonstrating proficiency in a Native American language.
