Sponsor: Representative Diaz, LD 19

Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure

Overview

Includes into lighting laws implements of husbandry and construction equipment that are incidentally operated or moved on a highway. Requires implements of husbandry and construction equipment that operate or move on a highway to be equipped with two strobe lights on the rear and one strobe light on each side.

History

Lighting laws relating to clearance and marker lamps, reflectors and stoplights, apply to vehicles of the type enumerated in statute, namely passenger buses, trucks, truck tractors and certain trailers, semitrailers and pole trailers, respectively, when operated on a highway. These vehicles must be equipped as required and all lamp equipment required must be lighted at the prescribed times, except that clearance and side marker lamps need not be lighted on a vehicle when operated within any municipality where there is sufficient light to render clearly discernible persons and vehicles on the highway at a distance of 500 feet (A.R.S. § 28-928).

A bus or truck regardless of size, must be equipped with two reflectors on the rear, one at each side, and two stoplights. A bus or truck 80 inches or more in overall width, must have two clearance lamps on the front one at each side, two clearance lamps on the rear one at each side, two side marker lamps on each side, one at or near the front and one at or near the rear.

A trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of more than 3,000 pounds must have two clearance lamps on the front one at each side, two side marker lamps on each side, one at or near the front and one at or near the rear, two reflectors on each side, one at or near the front and one at or near the rear, two clearance lamps on the rear, one at each side, and two reflectors, one at each side, and two stoplights.

Vehicles that exceed 30 feet in length must have a third side marker lamp at the midpoint between the front and rear marker lamps and two reflectors on each side, one at or near the front and one at or near the rear and a third reflector at the midpoint between the front and rear reflectors (A.R.S. § 28-929).
