A CONCURRENT MEMORIAL

Urging the State board on geographic and historic names to rename Leupp Road to Kachina Point Road.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

To the Chairperson of the State Board on Geographic and Historic Names:

Your memorialist respectfully represents:

Whereas, the Constitution and bylaws of the Hopi Tribe, article VI, powers of the tribal council, section 1(a), authorize the Hopi Tribal Council "to represent and speak for the Hopi Tribe in all matters for the welfare of the Tribe"; and

Whereas, the Hopi Tribe is a federally recognized sovereign nation with inherent authority to govern its lands and protect its cultural heritage; and

Whereas, the Hopi Tribal Council recognizes the historical and cultural significance of the name "Kachina Point," as it reflects the traditions, values and identity of the Hopi people; and

Whereas, officially renaming Leupp Road to Kachina Point Road would honor Hopi heritage and strengthen relationships between tribal, state and federal partners; and

Whereas, the Hopi Tribal Council fully supports this renaming, as it represents an important step toward preserving and promoting Hopi culture for future generations.

Wherefore your memorialist, the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring, prays:

1. That the State Board on Geographic and Historic Names rename Leupp Road to Kachina Point Road to promote Hopi heritage and culture in this state.

2. That the Secretary of State transmit a copy of this Memorial to the Chairperson of the State Board on Geographic and Historic Names.
