ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Seventh Legislature, First Regular Session
grade levels; 9/11 instruction
Purpose
Limits the requirement to provide age-appropriate instruction on 9/11 Education Day to students in grades 7 through 12.
Background
Statute requires September 11 of each year to be observed as 9/11 Education Day, a non-legal holiday. If September 11 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or other day when public school is not in session, 9/11 Education Day must be observed the following school day. On 9/11 Education Day, each public school must dedicate a portion of the school day to age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The State Board of Education (SBE) must provide a list of recommended resources relating to age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that align with the SBE prescribed academic standards and allow for public schools to recommend resources for addition to the list (A.R.S. §§ 1-321; 15-203; and 15-710.02).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Requires, on 9/11 Education Day, each public school to provide age-appropriate instruction to students in grades 7 through 12 on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, rather than to dedicate a portion of the school day to age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
2. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
