appropriation; reduction; courts

Purpose

Increases the total lump sum reduction in the FY 2025 General Appropriation Act
(FY 2025 Act) from the state General Fund (state GF) to $33,843,200 for the courts in FY 2025.

Background

Arizona's judiciary is comprised of five courts, the: 1) Arizona Supreme Court; 2) court of appeals; 3) superior courts; 4) justice courts; and 5) municipal courts. The Arizona Supreme Court consists of seven justices, support staff and the Administrative Office of the Courts, which under the direction of the Chief Justice, provides administrative supervision over the Arizona court system. The court of appeals has jurisdiction over all proceedings appealable from the superior court, except for death penalty cases. Comprised of 183 judges, the superior courts are Arizona's only general jurisdiction court and hear all types of cases, except those of small claims, minor offenses or violations of city codes and ordinances (Ariz. Const. art. 6 § 5-14).

The FY 2025 Act included a total FY 2025 lump sum reduction of $1,074,600 to Arizona's judiciary branch from the state GF, as follows: 1) $386,300 from the Arizona Supreme Court;
2) $508,200 from the court of appeals; and 3) $180,100 from the superior courts (Laws 2024,
Ch. 209
