Caucus & COW

Overview

Proclaims the Legislature's support for the disposal of federally held lands by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and opposition of the federal 30x30 Initiative.

History

Established in 1946, BLM's mission is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In 1976, the United States (U.S.) Congress tasked BLM with managing public lands for a variety of uses such as energy development, livestock grazing, recreation and timber harvesting while ensuring natural, cultural and historic resources are maintained for present and future use. Currently, BLM administers 245 million acres of public lands in the U.S. and of that acreage BLM administers 12.1 million acres in Arizona (BLM History)(BLM Arizona)(Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976).

On January 27, 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 14008 to address the climate crisis. In the executive order, it established the National Climate Task Force (Task Force), made up of leaders from various federal agencies, to facilitate the organization and deployment of a government-wide approach to combat the climate crisis. The Task Force was also charged with identifying strategies to achieve the goal of conserving at least 30% of lands and waters by 2030, otherwise known as the 30x30 Initiative. On January 20, 2025, President Trump issued Executive Order 14148 that revoked 68 executive orders, including former President Biden's Executive Order 14008.
