HB 2575: appropriation; Arizona geological survey
Sponsor: Representative Griffin, LD 19
Committee on Natural Resources, Energy & Water
Overview
Appropriates monies from the state General Fund (GF) in fiscal year 2026 to the University of Arizona for the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS).
History
The AZGS was established as an independent state agency by Laws 1987, Chapter 158, when it assumed the responsibilities of the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Technology. The Office of the State Geologist was created at the same time. In 2016, oversight of the AZGS was transferred to the University of Arizona and the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR). AZGS's statutory authority is found in A.R.S. Title 27, chapter 1, article 1.
The AZGS provides information to the public on geology and offers advice on using mineral and land resources in Arizona. Its responsibilities include:
1) mapping geologic features;
2) providing objective information about the geologic character of Arizona;
3) preparing data files with known earth fissures; and
4) maintaining a central database of reports, maps and other publications regarding Arizona's geology, mining and mineral resources. The State Geologist leads the AGS (A.R.S. §§ 27-102, 27- 103, 27-106).
The FY 2026 Baseline appropriation to the AZGS includes $1,208,200 and 20.9 FTE positions from the state GF (JLBC).
