BILL #    SB 1211

TITLE:     pharmacists; prescribing; naloxone; reporting

SPONSOR:    Shope

STATUS:   As Introduced

PREPARED BY:    James Martinez-Burney

Description

The bill would allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone hydrochloride, or any other opioid antagonist approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) without a signed prescription. The bill also removes related reporting and rulemaking requirements.

Estimated Impact

We estimate the bill will have no fiscal impact on the Board of Pharmacy.

The Board of Pharmacy does not anticipate a fiscal impact from the bill.

Analysis

The bill would make changes to the operational practices of the Board of Pharmacy, but we do not estimate a cost from removing the requirement that the Board set rules for the dispensing of opioid antagonists or from eliminating the requirement that a pharmacist dispensing naloxone report certain details to the Arizona Department of Health Services.  Currently, a pharmacist would report this through a Board of Pharmacy managed reporting system for all controlled substance prescriptions.

Local Government Impact

None
