on the death of the honorable dr. geraldine peten.

The Honorable Dr. Geraldine Peten passed away December 13, 2023, just one day shy of her 76th birthday. She was born to John and Juanita Peten on December 14, 1947 in the city of Durham, North Carolina.
Education was extremely important to Dr. Peten, and she was committed to being a lifelong learner. She earned a Doctorate in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Science in Construction Management from Arizona State University, a Master of Arts in Supervision and Administration from Seton Hall University and a Bachelor of Arts in Vocational Education from Montclair State College.
Following years of service as an educational administrator and consultant, Dr. Peten was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 2017 to represent then Legislative District 4 in the Arizona House of Representatives and was subsequently elected and served until 2021. In this capacity, she served on the Education, Land & Agriculture and the State & International Affairs committees and was the primary sponsor of four bills, including those that implemented a school funding task force and repealed college credit by examination. Dr. Peten gave generously of her time, energy and expertise to various worthwhile endeavors to promote civil rights, equity in education and community service, and she also founded the West Valley NAACP.
Dr. Peten raised her two sons, CJ Harris and Jordan Ashley, in Maplewood, New Jersey and Peoria, Arizona. Her enduring legacy is reflected in the profound love and unwavering dedication she bestowed on her children and 10 grandchildren.
Dr. Peten is survived by her sons, CJ and Jordan, her grandchildren, Paine Seth, Cy Jerome, Bryce Baron, Cameryn Juanita, Courtney Jae, Hunter Eugene, Jordan Ashlei, Mila Nova, Baldwin Rue and Axel Hampton, and her siblings, Charles Peten and Estene Tarber, as well as countless nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:
That the Members of the Legislature sincerely regret the passing of the Honorable Dr. Geraldine Peten and extend their sincere sympathies and condolences to her surviving family members and friends.
