appropriation; Diné college multipurpose center
Purpose
Appropriates $10,000,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2024 to the Governor's Office on Tribal Relations (GOTR) to distribute to Diné College for a multipurpose center in Window Rock.
Background
Established in
1968 by the Navajo Nation, Diné College was the first tribally-controlled and
accredited collegiate institution in the United States. Diné College is
governed by an
eight-member Board of Regents appointed by the Navajo Nation President and
offers certificates, associate degrees and bachelor's degrees (Diné
College). Diné College has six locations across Arizona, New Mexico and
Utah, one of which is in Window Rock, Arizona (Window Rock Center).
The GOTR assists state agencies in implementing tribal consultation and outreach activities, including evaluating, consolidating and coordinating activities relating to the education of American Indian students. The GOTR initiates or assists programs on tribal land only upon the request or approval of the tribal nation (A.R.S. § 41-2051; GOTR).
S.B. 1396 appropriates $10,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2024 to the GOTR.
Provisions
2. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
