Asian American; Pacific Islander month

Purpose

Establishes May of each year as Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, a non-legal holiday.

Background

Statute outlines 17 legal state holidays, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran's Day. Public offices and courts are closed on legal holidays, except for certain authorized purposes. Statute also lists several non-legal holidays, including Dr. Cesar Estrada Chavez Day, Prisoners of War Remembrance Day and Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution (A.R.S. Title 1, Chapter 3, Article 1).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   Establishes May of each year as Asian American and Pacific Islander Month.

2.   Specifies that Asian American and Pacific Islander Month is not a legal holiday.

3.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
