FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1194

 

Indian nations; tribes; legislative day

Purpose

Requires the Governor's Office on Tribal Relations (Office) to cooperate with the Legislative Indigenous Peoples Caucus for the facilitation of the annual Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day.

Background

The Office is responsible for assisting state agencies in implementing tribal consultation and outreach activities (A.R.S. § 41-2051). The Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day is annually held on Wednesday of the first week of each regular legislative session. The Office is responsible for facilitating the Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day in cooperation with Arizona's Indian Nations. The Office must: 1) coordinate the planning and preparation of the Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day with the President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives and legislators who are Native American; 2) invite the Legislature and other elected officials to pay tribute to the history and culture of Indigenous peoples and their contributions to the prosperity of the United States; and 3) schedule activities between state and Indian Nations and tribal leaders on issues in which the state and Indian Nations share a common interest or jurisdiction (A.R.S. § 41-2053).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   Requires the Office to cooperate with the Legislative Indigenous Peoples Caucus for the facilitation of the annual Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day.

2.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
