salt cedars; urging eradication

Purpose

            Urges United States Congress to appropriate monies and develop innovative solutions to eradicate salt cedars.

Background

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) classifies salt cedar also known as Tamarix ramosissima, as a terrestrial invasive plant, which is a non-native plant grown in a non-aquatic habitat. Terrestrial invasive plants can grow in agricultural fields, forests, wildlands and along waterways. Trees, shrubs, vines, grasses and herbaceous plants classify under the definition of terrestrial invasive plants (USDA).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this

legislation.

Provisions

1.   Urges the U.S. Congress to appropriate monies to the State of Arizona to eradicate salt cedars from Arizona waterways.

2.   Urges the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Department of Agriculture develop innovative solutions to control the proliferation of salt cedars.

3.   Directs the Secretary of State to transmit copies of the Memorial to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and each member of Congress from the State of Arizona.
