SUBJECT: Strike everything amendment to S.B. 1117, relating to appropriation; hypersonic wind tunnel
Purpose
Appropriates $3,500,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2022 to the University of Arizona (UA) for hypersonic wind tunnel research, development and infrastructure upgrades. Complimentary
Background
Hypersonic speed occurs at Mach 5 or higher, which translates to five times the speed of sound. UA has a functioning Mach 4 and Mach 5 wind tunnel. Hypersonics research is used to understand the aerodynamic effects on objects such as aircraft, missiles and high-speed flight vessels and how materials interact with the environment during flight (UA).
The strike-everything amendment to S.B. 1117 appropriates $3,500,000 from the state GF in FY 2022 to UA.
Provisions
1. Appropriates $3,500,000 from the state GF in FY 2022 to UA for materials, labor and installation costs related to the research, development and infrastructure upgrades of a hypersonic wind tunnel.
2. Requires UA, by December 15, 2021, to submit a report regarding the progress of the hypersonic wind tunnel to the Governor, President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives and provide of copy of the report to the Secretary of State.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
