Overview

Appropriates $4,000,000 from the state General Fund (GF) in FY 2022 to the University of Arizona (UA) for costs associated with a school of mining.

History

The Department of Mining and Geological Engineering (MGE), facilitated within the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona, is one of the university’s oldest departments that provides undergraduate degrees in mine operations, geomechanics, sustainable resource development and mineral processing. MGE contains several focus areas in research such as: 1) environmental remediation and monitoring systems; 2) geomechanics, geotechnical and tailings; 3) geophysical sensing techniques; 4) mine health and safety; 5) mine sensor technology; 6) mine technology and automation; 7) mineral and chemical characterization; 8) mineral processing, geometallurgy and extractive metallurgy; 9) space mining, underwater and deep mining; and 10) sustainable mining and development.
