HB 2770: mask mandates; business exception

Sponsor:  Representative Chaplik, LD 23

Committee on Commerce

Overview

Specifies businesses are not required to enforce mask mandates.

History

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). A novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The newly identified novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a worldwide pandemic of respiratory illness called COVID-19.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread is more likely when people are in close contact with one another.

Due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, many states, cities, towns and counties as well as other jurisdictions implemented mask mandates. Arizona has not enacted a state-wide mask mandate, but executive orders have required certain groups to wear masks.
