HB 2173: commercial driver licenses; renewal time

Sponsor:  Representative Carroll, LD 22

Transmitted to the Governor

Overview

Extends the commercial driver license (CDL) renewal timeline to every eight years.

History

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 28-3221, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is required to mark a license issued to a qualified person for a class A, B or C license as a CDL.

In addition to the requirements applicable to all driver license applicants, an original applicant for a class A, B or C license is subject to the following requirements: 1) submit evidence of compliance with medical standards and requirements that ADOT adopts by rule; 2) have held a driver license for at least one year either in Arizona, any other state or a foreign country; 3) take knowledge examinations; 4) demonstrate vehicular knowledge, if necessary; 5) take a driving test in a vehicle or vehicle combination that at least meets the minimum size requirements for the class of driver license sought. The holder of a CDL is required to renew the license every five years in a manner described by ADOT (A.R.S. § 28-3223).

Prior to renewing any CDL, a state must make the renewal of the CDL valid for no more than eight years from the date of issuance (48 CFR § 383.73(d)(6)).
