HB 2169: appropriation; tourism; dude ranches; promotion

Sponsor:  Representative Dunn, LD 13

Committee on Land, Agriculture & Rural Affairs

Overview

Appropriates $3 million from the state General Fund in fiscal year (FY) 2022 to the Office of Tourism to promote dude ranches in Arizona.

History

The Office of Tourism promotes tourism within Arizona, which includes planning and developing information campaigns, advertising, exhibitions and promotions for recreational, scenic and historical attractions throughout the state (A.R.S. § 41-2302). It receives funding from three sources:

1)   General Fund appropriations;

2)   Transfers from the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority consisting of partial allocations of the bed tax and car rental tax in Maricopa County to fund tourism promotion there (A.R.S. § 5-835); and

3)   A portion of tribal gaming contributions to fund statewide tourism promotion (A.R.S. § 5-601.02(H)(3)(a)(iv)).

There have been special line item appropriations of state General Fund monies to the Office of Tourism. For example, the FY 2022 General Appropriations Act made the following appropriations:

1)   $1 million for marketing, advertising and promoting tourism efforts in Arizona; and

2)   $100,000 for marketing and promoting the Arizona wine industry (Laws 2020, Chapter 58, § 86).
