Overview

Appropriates in fiscal year (FY) 2021 to the Department of Economic Security, $260,000 for coordinated hunger services and $475,000 in one-time funding for foodbank storage and food distribution.

History

In 1972, DES was established by consolidating multiple state agencies to provide an integrated approach to human services. Its mission is to make Arizona stronger by helping Arizonans reach their potential through temporary assistance for those in need, and care for the vulnerable. DES operates and provides services in the following areas: 1) aging and adult services; 2) benefits and medical eligibility; 3) child support services; 4) developmental disabilities; and 5) employment and rehabilitation services.

State and federal dollars are used to administer a USDA commodities food program, to assist in statewide food distribution, and for food banks. Monies are also used to provide information on where individuals and families can obtain food. According to the FY 2021 Baseline Book, in FY 2019 the funding for Coordinated Hunger Services assisted in the distribution of 166,588 pounds of food.
