ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Purpose
Designates the first Saturday in April of each year as Public Lands Day.
Background
Title
37, Arizona Revised Statutes, governs Arizona's state and public lands, which
includes State Trust Land, streams and forests. The State Land Department
administers Arizona's public lands to conserve and preserve natural resources,
wildlife habitat, wilderness areas and historical sites and artifacts and to
permit public use of the lands, including for recreation, agriculture,
ranching, mining and timber production, and for energy and public utility
services (A.R.S.
37-902).
U.S. Code defines public lands as any land and interest in land owned by the United States within the several states and administered by the Secretary of the Interior through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, without regard to how the United States acquired ownership (43 U.S. Code § 1702).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Designates the first Saturday in April of each year as Public Lands Day.
2. Specifies that Public Lands Day is not a legal holiday.
3. Contains a statement of legislative findings.
4. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
