appropriation; universities; student internships
Purpose
Appropriates $300,000 to the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) for student internships in Washington, D.C.
Background
The Arizona Constitution establishes ABOR as the governing entity for Arizona's university system which consists of Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU) and the University of Arizona (UA) (Ariz. Const. art. 11 § 5). Statute provides and defines ABORs general authority related to the universities, including fixing tuition rates and fees, establishing curricula, designating courses and prescribing student admissions qualifications to the universities (A.R.S. § 15-1626).
Currently, each university facilitates a variety of internships in Washington, D.C. including internships with federal agencies, advocacy groups, nonprofit organizations and other universities.
S.B. 1526 appropriates $300,000 in FY 2020 from the state General Fund to ABOR for student internships in Washington, D.C.
Provisions
1. Appropriates $300,000 in FY 2020 from the state General Fund to ABOR for equal distribution to ASU, NAU and UA for student internships in Washington, D.C. in partnership with a third‑party organization selected by ABOR.
2. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
