Directs the State Board of
Education (SBE) to require at least a one-half course credit in economics,
which includes financial literacy and personal financial management, for high
school graduation.
History
Pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-701.01(A)(2), the SBE has prescribed a minimum course of study and competency requirements for Arizona students to graduate from high school that incorporates academic standards in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. This course of study is established in Arizona Administrative Code requires a minimum of 22 credits for high school graduation which includes 3 credits in social studies:
· 1 credit of American history, including Arizona history;
· 1 credit of world history or geography;
· 0.5 credit of American government, including civics and Arizona government; and
· 0.5 credit in economics (R7-2-302).
The Arizona History and Social Sciences Standards, approved by SBE, outlines course considerations for a high school economics class. This includes content from:
· financial literacy or personal finance, such as budgeting, saving, spending, investment, credit, banking and insurance;
· economic reasoning;
· economic systems;
· exchange and markets;
· the national economy; and
· the global economy.
Additionally, the SBE can create a required separate personal finance course for high school graduation (A.R.S. § 15-701.01(A)(2)).
Provisions
1. Directs the SBE to require at least one-half of a course credit in economics, which must include financial literacy and personal financial management, for high school graduation. (Sec. 1)
