FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2343

 

schools; child abuse hotline

 

Purpose

 

Requires schools to post a sign that contains the child abuse and neglect hotline, instructions for 911 calls and information about the Department of Child Safety (DCS) website.

 

Background

 

DCS operates and maintains a centralized intake hotline to protect children by receiving communications concerning suspected abuse or neglect. The hotline is the first step in the safety assessment and investigation process and is used to quickly gather information to begin a report or inform law enforcement (A.R.S. § 8-455).

 

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

 

Provisions

 

1.      Requires district and charter schools to post a sign that is at least 11 inches by 17 inches in a clearly visible, public, readily accessible area of the school that contains the following in large print in English and Spanish:

a)      the telephone number of the centralized intake hotline for suspected child abuse and neglect;

b)      instructions to call 911 for emergencies; and

c)      directions for accessing the DCS website.

 

2.      Becomes effective on the general effective date.
