FUNCTION OF THE State board of education:
The eleven-member State Board of Education (Board) establishes programs, initiates policies and enforces laws and regulations relating to schools and the educational development of the individual student (A.R.S. § 15-203). The Board’s mission is “to aggressively set policies that foster excellence in public education” and its duties include, but are not limited to, supervising the public school system, prescribing the minimum courses of study, determining high school graduation requirements, and supervising the teacher certification process (A.R.S. § 15-203).
STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION:
As provided in Article 11, Section 3 of the Arizona Constitution, the Board is composed of the following members: the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the president of a state university or a state college, four lay members, a president or chancellor of a community college district, a person who is an owner or administrator of a charter school, a superintendent of a high school district, a classroom teacher and a county school superintendent. The Governor appoints Board members, other than the Superintendent of Public Instruction, for four-year terms.

SALARY OR OTHER COMPENSATION:
Board members are allowed travel expenses and reimbursement for subsistence in accordance with A.R.S. Title 38, Chapter 4, Article 2. There is no other salary or compensation for this position.
BUDGET AND FTES:
The Board’s total budget for FY 2008-2009 is $3,576,400, of which $3,192,600 is appropriated from the state General Fund. This includes 10 FTE positions.
