FUNCTION OF THE psychiatric security review board:

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 13-3994, the Psychiatric Security Review Board (“Board”) reviews the cases of persons who are committed to the Arizona State Hospital because they are found “Guilty Except Insane” and the court finds that the criminal act the person committed caused death or serious physical injury of or the threat of death or serious physical injury to another person.  After a person is placed under the jurisdiction of the Board, it may conduct release hearings no earlier than 120 days after placement to determine whether the person may be released, conditionally released or must remain in a secure state mental health facility.

 

STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION:

Pursuant to A.R.S.§ 31-501, the Board shall consist of: one licensed psychiatrist experienced in the criminal justice system and not contracted to or employed by this state; one licensed psychologist experienced in the criminal justice system not otherwise contracted to or employed by this state; one person experienced in parole, community supervision or probation procedures and who is not a psychiatrist or psychologist experienced in the criminal justice system; one public member who is not a psychiatrist or psychologist experienced in the criminal justice system or who is not experienced in parole, community supervision or probation; and one person who is either a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist who is experienced in the criminal justice system and not contracted to or employed by this state.  Members of the Board serve staggered four-year terms.

Board members are eligible to receive compensation at a rate not to exceed $30 for each day engaged in the service of the Board.
