A RESOLUTION
On the death of sgt. Thomas hontz.
(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)
Sgt. Thomas Hontz was killed in the line of duty at the age of forty‑five during a SWAT training exercise on February 20, 2002.
Sgt. Hontz, a twenty-four year veteran of the police force, was the first Scottsdale police officer to die in the line of duty. At the time of his death, Hontz supervised the Special Assignments Unit of the SWAT team and was also a team leader. In addition, Hontz was the department's use-of-force expert and was responsible for oversight of its less-lethal use-of-force training.
As a staff instructor for PPCT Management Systems, Sgt. Hontz's contribution of professional knowledge and expertise extended beyond the boundaries of the State of Arizona to police officers and military personnel nationally and internationally. Sgt. Hontz also made regular contributions to industry magazines and training videos aimed at improving the quality of law enforcement. Known as more than a police officer or tactical leader, Sgt. Hontz was considered a unique contributor to the world of law enforcement training and a true pioneer in his profession.
He will be missed by his family, his friends, his colleagues and the people of the State of Arizona.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona:
That the Members of the House of Representatives sincerely regret the passing of Sgt. Thomas Hontz and extend their most sincere sympathies and condolences to his wife, Cathy, his three sons, Christopher, Justin and Trey and his other surviving relatives.
UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE MAY 14, 2002.
