A RESOLUTION

on the death of raymond s. kellis.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Dr. Raymond S. Kellis passed away suddenly on June 8, 2000 at the age of seventy.

Born in Mesa, Arizona on September 19, 1929, Raymond Kellis served in the United States Air Force and received his bachelor degree from the University of Arizona and advanced degrees from Arizona State University. Beginning his career in education as a science teacher at Peoria High School in 1957, he went on to serve as a principal and counselor before becoming superintendent of the Peoria Unified School District, a post he held for seventeen years.  During his tenure as superintendent, he ably led the district through tremendous growth and changes.  In 1995, he left the district to accept a post as special assistant to Northern Arizona University's president, in which he served as the liaison to state school superintendents and to the Governor’s office on kindergarten through twelfth grade issues.  Throughout more than four decades as an educator and administrator, Ray Kellis distinguished himself as a true professional who was committed to improving education and bettering the lives of children.

Despite the demands of his career, Ray Kellis gave freely of his time, energy and efforts to various worthwhile civic and professional endeavors. Among his many accomplishments, he ably served such worthwhile organizations as Arizona School Administrators, the American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa and the Arizona Town Hall Research Committee. He also served as chairman of the Joint Legislative Children's Delivery System Advisory Committee and two terms as president of the Arizona State Board of Education and was recently a consultant to the state School Facilities Board.  Active in his church, he served for ten years as president of the Glendale Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Ray Kellis’ integrity, dedication and commitment to excellence in all of his endeavors earned him the respect of all who knew him.

Ray Kellis will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and his peers and colleagues.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the Legislature sincerely regret the passing of Raymond S. Kellis and extend their deepest sympathies to his wife, Nadine, his sons, Dana and Quinn, his daughters, Vanessa, Renae, Valerie, Sabrina, Ericka and Quenta, his forty-one grandchildren and his other family members.
