Project Description

As part of the Arizona Centennial Commemoration, the Arizona State Legislature launched Kids and the Capitol: The Arizona Legislative Centennial Civics Project, a civics education initiative for K-12 students in Arizona. As the State approached its 100th birthday, the Legislature realized how important it is to reflect on our role as Arizona’s citizens. For our children, the commemoration was an opportunity to educate them on our system of government and the value of citizenship. Through a bi-partisan effort, the members of the Legislature would like to educate students about the legislative process and introduce each student to key parts of Arizona history and culture.

On February 14, 2012, every school in the state received a DVD with approximately 2 hours of civics education content. Funded by major Arizona philanthropic organizations with interest in civics education, the DVD was delivered to Arizona school children in time to complement Statehood discussions. Additionally, the content is intended to serve as a supplement to instruction on a variety of civics related topics that are taught throughout the school year.
