Dr. Randall Friese was first elected to the House of Representatives by District 9 in 2014. He is currently the ranking Democrat on the Health Committee, and also serves on the Judiciary Committee. During the First Regular Session of the 52nd Legislature in 2015, he also served on the Government and Higher Education Committee.

Dr. Friese was born in Baltimore and earned both his undergraduate degree, in biochemistry, and his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He completed his medical residency as well as a trauma research fellowship at the University of Colorado Department of Surgery. Dr. Friese served on active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1997-2001. He then completed a critical care fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Since 2008, he has been a trauma surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He was one of the trauma surgeons who cared for the victims of the January 8, 2011 shooting in Tucson that wounded Congresswoman Giffords.

Dr. Friese is married to Susan Friese, a former nurse, whose involvement in the Tucson community includes membership on several boards, including Planned Parenthood AZ and the January 8th Memorial Development Committee. Susan also works as a Literacy Program Assistant at Literacy Connects. Dr. Friese and Susan share their home with three rescued cats--Baxter, Agador and Blanca--as well as Sandler, their 12-year-old golden retriever.
