Sec. 2.  Legislative intent

A.  It is the intent of the legislature to set aside the fourth Thursday in March annually as the "Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day".  This day is to honor the more than fifteen thousand men and women involved in the "Tuskegee Experiment"; the Army Air Corp program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft.  The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors and all the personnel who kept the planes in the air.

B.  Due to their determination and perseverance, the Tuskegee Airmen became one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II.  The Tuskegee Airmen's achievements, together with the men and women who supported them are commemorated in this legislation.
