A RESOLUTION
honoring mia yocopis on receiving a 2000 prudential spirit of community award for her exceptional volunteer service.
(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)
Whereas, Mia Yocopis, an esteemed resident of Phoenix and a student at North Canyon High School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary community service in being named as Arizona’s top high school student volunteer and receiving a 2000 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
Whereas, this prestigious award, presented by the Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities. Mia Yocopis was selected from more than twenty thousand high school and middle level students around the country to receive this honor; and
Whereas, Mia Yocopis earned this award by giving generously of her time and energy to "Wings of Hope", a youth-run volunteer organization that helps non-English speaking refugees with a variety of services. After befriending a young Bosnian girl and learning of her family’s plight, Mia Yocopis selflessly assisted the family in completing the paperwork necessary for them to obtain health insurance and employment referrals. Wings of Hope now utilizes the services of twenty young volunteers who work with ten local refugee families; and
Whereas, the strength and success of our communities and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great part, on the dedication of young people such as Mia Yocopis who use their considerable talents and resources to serve and better the lives of others.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:
1. That the Members of the Senate congratulate Mia Yocopis on receiving the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her outstanding record of community service and extend best wishes for her continued success.
2. That the Secretary of State of the State of Arizona transmit copies of this Resolution to Mia Yocopis and North Canyon High School.
