A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

on the death of officer brett c. buckmister.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Brett C. Buckmister passed away on March 21, 2000 at the age of twenty‑seven following a tragic automobile accident in Page, Arizona.

Born January 13, 1973 in Mesa, Arizona, Brett Buckmister graduated from Mesa High School in 1991 and went on to attend Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Mesa Community College while holding various accounting and administrative positions with local businesses.  He was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Phillipines-Naga and he admirably served from January 1991 through January 1994.  He began his career with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in February 1999 and graduated from the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy in June. Assigned badge #5548, Officer Buckmister completed advanced basic training in August and was assigned to duty in Page.

On the snowy morning of March 21, Officer Buckmister was enjoying a day off with his family at home in Page when a call came requesting his help with an accident.  While driving to the scene of the accident south of Page, his patrol car collided with another vehicle.  The terrible impact killed not only Brett Buckmister but also three members of the Redhouse family who were in the other vehicle. Officer Buckmister is the youngest of the twenty‑seven DPS officers who have died in the line of duty.

Throughout his short but exemplary career in the law enforcement profession, Officer Buckmister distinguished himself as a hardworking, enthusiastic and conscientious employee.  As he faced the risks inherent in his line of work, Officer Buckmister remained committed to preserving and protecting the public peace and safety of all citizens.  It is fitting that the citizens of this state recognize the tremendous service and sacrifice of an individual such as Officer Buckmister who gave his life in the line of duty.

Officer Brett Buckmister will be greatly missed by his family and many friends as well as his colleagues at the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:

That the Members of the Legislature sincerely regret the passing of Officer Brett C. Buckmister and extend their deepest sympathies to his wife, Rosanna, sons, Caleb and Brayden, parents, Douglas and Catherine, brothers, Aaron and Brandon, sisters, Charlon and Amber, grandparents, Charles, Lucille, Harry and Tillie, and other surviving family members.
