Co-Chairman Jones called the meeting to order at 8:07 a.m. and attendance was noted.

 

Arizona Special Missions Unit

 

Luke Taylor distributed "Arizona Special Mission Unit Briefing" (Attachment A), discussed the following subjects and answered questions posed by the Committee:

 

·         House amendments to SB 1083 (50th Legislature, Second Regular Session)

·         Mission

·         Purpose

·         Initiatives

·         Vetting process

·         Training model

·         Proposed Governor's action

 

 

 

Senator Griffin distributed "2010 Arizona Cattle Growers' Association – Restore Our Border (ROB) Security Plan" (Attachment B) and requested a presentation on the plan at the next Committee meeting.

 

Arizona Border Trash

 

Henry Darwin, Director, Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), distributed "Arizona Border Trash" (Attachment C), discussed the following points in reference to DEQ's trash program along the U.S./Mexico border and answered questions posed by the Committee:

 

·         Discards giving insight into border crossers

·         Geographic area

·         Border trash cleanups – organizations and volunteer groups

·         Tohono O'odham Nation – Solid Waste Management Department

·         Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Southern Arizona Project

·         ADEQ's projects

·         Recent cleanups

 

Inmate Labor Update

                                                                                   

Charles Ryan, Director, Department of Corrections, distributed "Arizona Department of Corrections – ADC Border Clean-Up Project" (Attachment D), discussed the following points and answered questions posed by the Committee:

 

 

The Committee discussed what the Department of Homeland Security can and cannot do, which Mr. Orrantia said he would research and report back to the Committee.  The Committee discussed having a presentation on the Restore Our Border (ROB) Security Plan at the next Committee meeting.

 

Representative Jones explained that the Committee would resume the schedule of meeting on the last Wednesday of every other month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

 

Senator Melvin discussed the following websites and setting up links between the sites:

 

 

 

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
