POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE
DIRECTOR:
Pursuant to A.R.S. § 28-363, the
Director of ADOT is required to supervise and administer the overall activities
of ADOT, its divisions and employees; appoint assistant directors for each of
the divisions; provide assembly and distribution of information to the public;
delegate powers, functions and duties as deemed necessary; and exercise
complete and exclusive control and jurisdiction over the use of state highways
and routes. The Director also is required to coordinate the design,
right-of-way purchase and construction of controlled access highways that are
state routes or highways and the separation, extension and widening of arterial
streets. The Director must submit an annual report to the Speaker of the House
of Representatives and the President of the Senate documenting the expenditures
of such construction projects.
The Director assists regional transportation planning
agencies, councils of governments, tribal governments, counties, cities and
towns in the development of transportation plans. The Director also must
designate the necessary agencies for enforcing the provisions of the laws the
Director administers or enforces, and cooperate with the Arizona-Mexico Commission
to collect data and conduct projects on issues relating to ADOT.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE OR
OTHER STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS:
Pursuant to A.R.S. § 28-361, the Department of
Administration, in consultation with the Governor’s office, is required to prepare
a job description for the position of Director and recruit candidates for the
position. The State Transportation Board then receives and reviews applications
for the position and must forward the names of all qualified applicants to the
Governor. The Governor appoints the Director from that list of candidates and
at any time may ask for additional names and recommendations.
SALARY:
The Director earns an annual
salary of $130,000.
AGENCY BUDGET AND FTEs:
The total budget for ADOT in
FY 2008-2009 is $468,509,800. Of that amount, $72,500 is appropriated from the
state General Fund. There are 412 FTEs.
