POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE DIRECTOR: 

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 5-504, the Arizona State Lottery Commission (Commission) is responsible for overseeing a state lottery to produce the maximum amount of revenue.  To that end, the Commission is charged with authorizing the Executive Director to adopt rules relating to the types of lottery games to be conducted, the manner of payment of prizes, the licensing of agents to sell tickets, the prices of tickets, the prize structure of lottery games and the frequency of drawings.  The Commission consists of the Executive Director and five other members appointed by the Governor, three of which are required to have at least five years’ experience in law enforcement, certified public accounting or marketing or advertising (A.R.S. § 5-502).

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE OR OTHER STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS:

The Executive Director of the Commission is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Governor of Arizona (A.R.S. § 5-503).  Because the Executive Director is responsible for exercising immediate supervision over the lottery, statute requires that he or she must be qualified by training and experience to administer the state lottery.  In addition, the Executive Director is prohibited from engaging in any other profession or occupation during his or her tenure as the Executive Director.
