FUNCTION OF THE SBCS:
Pursuant
to A.R.S. § 15-182, the SBCS exercises general supervision over its charter
schools and recommends legislation pertaining to charter schools to the Legislature,
grants charter status to qualifying applicants for charter schools, determines
the policy of the SBCS, delegates to the Superintendent of Public Instruction
(SPI) the execution of SBCS policies and prepares a budget for expenditures
necessary for the proper maintenance and accomplishment of its purpose.
STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR
POSITION:
The
SBCS is composed of ten gubernatorial appointments, the SPI or the SPI’s
designee and three members of the Legislature serving as advisory
members. The appointed positions consist of six members of the general
public, at least two of whom must reside in a school district in which at least
sixty percent of the children meet the eligibility requirements for free and
reduced lunch and at least one of whom resides on an Indian reservation, two
members from the business community, one member who is a charter school teacher
and the remaining member who is a charter school operator. Appointed
members serve staggered four-year terms and members of the Legislature serve
two-year terms concurrent with their respective terms of office.

COMPENSATION:
Members
of the SBCS are not eligible for compensation but are eligible to receive
reimbursement for travel expenses and subsistence pursuant to Title 38, Chapter
4, Article 2.
BUDGET AND FTES:
The
SBCS FY 2008-2009 appropriated General Fund budget is $1,051,000 with 13
full-time equivalent positions.
