FUNCTION OF THE arizona
medical board:
In
accordance with A.R.S. § 32-1403, the primary duty of the Board is to protect
the public from unlawful, incompetent, unqualified, impaired or unprofessional
practitioners of allopathic medicine through
licensure, regulation and rehabilitation of the profession in Arizona.
STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR
POSITION:
Pursuant
to A.R.S. § 32-1402, the Board consists of twelve members, four of whom are
members of the public and eight of whom are actively practicing medicine. One
of the four public members must be a licensed practical nurse or a professional
nurse with at least five years' experience. The eight appointed physicians must
be from at least three different counties of the state. Not more than five of
the Board members may be from any one county. Each physician must be a resident
of Arizona and must have been practicing medicine as a licensed physician for
at least five years before appointment. Members of the Board serve five-year
terms and are appointed by the Governor.

COMPENSATION:
Board
members are eligible to receive compensation in the amount of $250 per day for
each day of actual service in the business of the Board and all expenses
incurred in attending Board meetings (A.R.S. § 32-1402).
BUDGET AND FTES:
The
Arizona Joint Legislative Budget Committee estimated a $5,822,600 operating
budget and 58.5 FTEs for FY 2008-2009. These numbers are unchanged in the FY
2009-2010 estimates.
