Summary of the
proposed strike-everything amendment
The proposed strike-everything
amendment prohibits nurses from performing surgical abortions.
History
Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.)
§ 32-1601 defines licensees of the Board of Nursing (Board) including practical
nurses, registered nurses, and registered nurse practitioners.
Current law specifies a scope of practice for each type of nurse. For example, practical
nurses may contribute to the assessment of the health status of individuals
and groups. Registered nurses may diagnose and treat human responses to
actual and potential health problems. And registered nurse practitioners
may assess clients, synthesizing and analyzing data and understanding and
applying principles of health care at an advanced level. In addition to the
specifically delineated elements of each nurses scope of practice, current law
allows nurses to perform additional acts that require education and training as
prescribed by the Board and that are recognized by the nursing profession as
proper to be performed by that type of nurse. A.R.S. § 32-1601 includes in the
definition of unprofessional conduct for nurses, aiding and abetting in a
criminal abortion or attempting, agreeing, or offering to procure or assist in
a criminal abortion.
